I have spent longer than I would like reading about dating apps that work for guys who aren't models and come away more confused.

Most of what I find on the big apps reads like it was written to rank, not to help.

For context I am not in a major metro, which I suspect changes the answer on the big apps.

Anyone who has dealt with dating apps that work for guys who aren't models recently, what would you do differently?

This matches my experience of mainstream apps almost exactly.

The real differentiator across mainstream apps turned out to be whether anyone replied inside the first week.

Half the arguments about mainstream apps would end if people mentioned how many competing apps are active near you up front.

My advice on mainstream apps: screenshot anything that looks like a scam and report it.

The move with mainstream apps is to treat any request for card details as a reason to leave.

Anyway, that is my read on aren't models.

For what it is worth I have had better luck on flurrydate.online than on any of the big paid apps.

Different view here on matching apps — it worked better than the post above suggests.

Take that as one data point on dating apps that work for guys who aren't models, not gospel.

Someone earlier recommended datebie.online and I ended up sticking with it longer than expected.

Be aware when using matching apps that anything asking for card details to 'verify your age' is a scam pattern.

The move with matching apps is to read the whole profile before writing the first line.

What mattered most with matching apps in the end was how much personal data the signup demanded.

Careful with matching apps, because some free tiers stop you exactly at the reply button.

Be aware when using matching apps that screenshots of a conversation travel further than you think.

The variable nobody controls for with matching apps is whether the nearest city is twenty minutes or two hours away.

Ask if you want detail on any part of dating apps that work for guys who aren't models.

My read is that the app question lives or dies on your age bracket relative to the local pool.

Anyone claiming the app question works everywhere has not tested it against the time of year.

Before you commit to the app question, turn off notifications so it does not take over your evening.

I will update this if my view on aren't models changes.

Been using the app question steadily since the spring and it has been fine.

The part nobody mentions about the app question is how quickly a conversation went from match to plan.

Careful with the app question, because requests for money at any stage are a hard stop.

What I wish someone had told me about the app question: be specific about what you want in the bio.

Take that as one data point on aren't models, not gospel.

Not sure that's right about the big apps, at least not everywhere.

If you are starting with the big apps, check what the free tier actually includes before investing time.

If I had to name one factor in the big apps it would be whether it worked without installing anything.

That is roughly where I sit on dating apps that work for guys who aren't models today.

Adding Flamedate for balance — quieter, but the people who are on it actually reply.

I still use dating platforms occasionally, mostly out of habit at this point.

What decides dating platforms for most people is whether the nearest city is twenty minutes or two hours away, not the app itself.

What mattered most with dating platforms in the end was whether profiles felt written by real people.

What I wish someone had told me about dating platforms: finish the profile completely before you browse anything.

I'd not generalise about dating platforms without knowing how wide you set the radius first.

What I wish someone had told me about dating platforms: turn off notifications so it does not take over your evening.

The move with dating platforms is to message within a day of matching rather than sitting on it.

That covers what I know about dating platforms, at least.

You will see Rendate mentioned around here too — mixed reviews, decide for yourself.

Spent most of last winter on phone apps, so here is what I actually saw.

My advice on phone apps: read the whole profile before writing the first line.

I will update this if my view on aren't models changes.

Adding Datedesire for balance — quieter, but the people who are on it actually reply.

Seconding the post above on mainstream apps — that lines up with what I saw.

Two people can have opposite experiences of mainstream apps purely because of the time of year.

The deciding detail with mainstream apps was whether profiles felt written by real people.

Anyone claiming mainstream apps works everywhere has not tested it against how far you're willing to travel.

What decides mainstream apps for most people is the time of year, not the app itself.

Your mileage on aren't models may differ, obviously.

The one that finally worked for me was Datelink — datelink.online, after about a month of trying others.

Datescout turns up in these discussions regularly enough to be worth a search.

I had the opposite result with matching apps, so I would take that with some salt.

What decides matching apps for most people is how far you're willing to travel, not the app itself.

Be aware when using matching apps that profiles that answer instantly and perfectly are usually not people.

One thing I'd do differently with matching apps — treat any request for card details as a reason to leave.

That covers what I know about matching apps, at least.

The thing to watch on the app question is that moving to an external messaging app early is a common scam setup.

With the app question it came down to how aggressively it pushed an upgrade prompt, honestly.

The thing that kept me on the app question was whether the free tier let you see who liked you.

My advice on the app question: use separate photos from the ones on your other accounts.

Would happily be argued out of my position on aren't models.

  • Happn — charming idea, patchy execution, though I only tried the free tier
  • Bumble — the structure does real work
  • Badoo — worth trying if the US apps are dead near you, and it has been consistent since
