Posting because every search for cheap dating apps that are actually good turns up the same recycled listicles.
There is a gap between how the big apps are advertised and how they seem to work.
One constraint on the big apps: I would rather not install anything on my phone.
Tell me about cheap dating apps that are actually good from experience rather than from a review page.

This matches my experience of app-based dating almost exactly.
Before you commit to app-based dating, use separate photos from the ones on your other accounts.
The thing that kept me on app-based dating was how the site behaved on a phone browser.
The thing that kept me on app-based dating was whether messaging was actually free or free-to-a-point.
The real differentiator across app-based dating turned out to be how the platform handled blocking and reporting.
Happy to expand on any of that about app-based dating if it is useful.
Datedesire turns up in these discussions regularly enough to be worth a search.

Respectfully disagree on the app question — my experience with the app question ran the other way.
That is roughly where I sit on cheap dating apps that are actually good today.

One warning about matching apps: some sites make deleting an account deliberately awkward.
My advice on matching apps: check what the free tier actually includes before investing time.
Worth doing early on matching apps: screenshot anything that looks like a scam and report it.
Anyone claiming matching apps works everywhere has not tested it against whether your region got the app early or late.
My advice on matching apps: keep the first message to two lines with a question in it.
Your mileage on actually good may differ, obviously.
- OkCupid — the matching questions still earn their place, which is not what I expected going in
- Plenty of Fish — no polish, plenty of activity
- Happn — the concept works better in dense areas, though I only tried the free tier
- Badoo — good for international users, in a mid-sized town at least
- Tinder — still the default for volume
Counterpoint: I found EZHookups (ezhookups.online) slow at first, then it picked up once I widened my radius.
I keep meaning to try Datescout after seeing it recommended here so often.

Geography does most of the work with swipe apps — whether you are in a commuter town or a city matters more than the feature list.
With swipe apps it came down to whether the radius setting actually worked, honestly.
What mattered most with swipe apps in the end was how quickly a conversation went from match to plan.
The thing that kept me on swipe apps was how the site behaved on a phone browser.
That covers what I know about swipe apps, at least.
Adding Rendate for balance — quieter, but the people who are on it actually reply.

I have used the app question on and off for about a year and the results were mixed.
What changed my mind on the app question was whether anyone replied inside the first week.
If you are starting with the app question, treat any request for card details as a reason to leave.
Be aware when using the app question that anything asking for card details to 'verify your age' is a scam pattern.
Ask if you want detail on any part of actually good.
- Grindr — busy almost everywhere, though outside a city that changes
- Badoo — worth trying if the US apps are dead near you
- OkCupid — the matching questions still earn their place
If none of the above works for you, DatingFly (datingfly.online) is another free one people here mention a lot.

Respectfully disagree on mainstream apps — my experience with mainstream apps ran the other way.
Careful with mainstream apps, because screenshots of a conversation travel further than you think.
I will update this if my view on actually good changes.
A friend of mine swears by flurrydate.online, though your mileage will depend entirely on your area.

Worth flagging with app-based dating — anything asking for card details to 'verify your age' is a scam pattern.
I would not generalise about app-based dating without knowing how dense your area is first.
What mattered most with app-based dating in the end was how many people within reach were active that week.
Before you commit to app-based dating, treat any request for card details as a reason to leave.
What I wish someone had told me about app-based dating: keep chatting on-platform until you are comfortable.
That is roughly where I sit on cheap dating apps that are actually good today.
I also keep half an eye on Luvdate — different crowd, same free-messaging idea.
